Why we developed Ricochet Investigator

In the high-stakes world of Air Traffic Control, data is abundant but time is scarce. Explore how Jotron’s Ricochet Investigator was born from a critical need to bridge the gap between advanced recording technology and the human requirement for rapid, actionable incident analysis.

The Ricochet Investigator at a glance

In the aftermath of a safety-critical event, investigators often face a mountain of fragmented data. Hours of recorded audio must manually be reviewed, transcribed and pieced together under time pressure. In Air Traffic Control (ATC) environments, where every second counts and every word matters, this manual process can delay the ability to identify root issues and improve safety.

This is why we created the Ricochet Investigator, the newest member of the Ricochet record and replay ecosystem.

What is the Ricochet Investigator?

As an AI‑enhanced incident analysis tool, the Ricochet Investigator automatically transcribes recorded audio into highly accurate, searchable, and time‑stamped text. By transforming recorded communications into actionable insight, it allows investigators to focus on analyzing the “why” rather than the tedious “what” of data preparation.

The challenge we set out to solve

In ATC and other time-critical communication environments, investigations were being held back by manual, fragmented processes. Investigators were facing:

  • Time-consuming manual transcription: Transcribing hours of radio communication is slow, costly, and resource-heavy.

  • High-pressure documentation: The need for absolute accuracy and detailed documentation often clashes with the urgency of an investigation.

  • Complex data volumes: Handling large volumes of complex, multi-source data can lead to inconsistency.

As a result, investigators were often spending more time reconstructing events than understanding them, delaying critical safety insight when it mattered most.

Leveraging insights from the industry

Our development of the Investigator was not done in isolation. Through our close working partnerships with Air Navigation Service Providers (ANSPs), we have a direct line to Safety Managers and Investigators.

Their feedback allowed us to identify a critical disconnect: while recording technology has advanced to capture more data than ever before, the tools available for investigators to process the data have not kept pace. Thus, the easy capture, storage, and replay of data could not be properly structured or utilized, leading to slow, drawn-out results.

Combining it with ATC shifts

This issue was not only seen through internal observation. ATC environments are becoming increasingly complex, with higher traffic volume leading to vast amounts of data needing to be analyzed. This, subsequently leads to an increase in pressure to improve the speed, accuracy, and auditability of investigations.

Solving the disconnect through technical expertise

We addressed these operational pain points by developing a purpose-built, AI-powered tool that moves beyond generic speech-to-text. Ricochet Investigator is built on:

  • Purpose-trained machine learning models: Specifically adapted for ATC-type audio and radio communications, ensuring high accuracy even in noisy environments.

  • Modular, scalable architecture: A web-browser accessible system that allows for secure collaboration across investigation teams.

  • Automated precision: The system produces searchable, timestamped transcripts automatically, removes noise to improve clarity, and allows for custom keyword tuning.

By integrating tightly with the Ricochet ecosystem, data becomes investigation‑ready from the moment it is brought into Ricochet Investigator.

Offering a versatile tool for the investigator

Ricochet Investigator is more than just a transcription tool, it is a cornerstone of modern safety management.

  • Speech-to-text: Automated, high-accuracy transcription tailored for aviation terminology.

  • Multi-data compatibility: Designed to support the full investigation workflow, including audio, screen, and radar data analysis.

  • Investigation and prevention: Beyond incident analysis, it serves as a powerful tool for training and Quality Assurance (QA) teams to improve operational standards.

  • Secure-by-design: Built to satisfy rigorous global standards, including ISO 27001:2023 for information security and ISO 9001:2015 for quality management.

At Jotron, our vision is a safe journey. Ricochet Investigator supports this mission by enabling rapid, accurate incident analysis and insight. By helping organizations identify issues faster and improve decision-making, we enhance the safety and reliability of critical communications worldwide.
